Choosing a Photographer

How does a photographer find the balance between shooting what he/she wants artistically and photographing what their clients want? Obviously the client should get what they want, they're the client. However, it can be difficult for a photographer to break from their style to adapt to a particular clients needs. Should clients take more time to carefully select a photographer that shares their style, or is it entirely up to the photographer to adapt?

I've recently began going down the road of real estate photography. Thankfully the clients I currently work with share my tastes in style. We work well together. However in the portraiture world I've worked with some clients who have their own idea for the shots. They chose me simply because I was a photographer and my rate fit within their budget. However, our styles didn't mess. I did the job, but acquiring desired results was difficult and I'd often end up with something that I'd probably not put in a portfolio. Artist have a portfolios for a reason. Yes its to display technical knowledge, but more importantly it should present the breadth of an artists style. I have a couple of different styles that I shoot. I often try and get clients to tell me what they liked in my portfolio so that I can get an idea of what they're wanting me to produce for them. This communication between clients and photographers is crucial. Hopefully this insight into one photographers mind helps those who're looking for a photographer make a great decision.

So I just wrapped up a project that has been submitted to the 2009 Nikon Festival. Once the video is available I'll be posting it on here. With a crew of 15 and a cast of 7 we produced a pretty incredible piece in a 2 week period. The video is currently in the "approval" period and I'm waiting to hear back with the results.

Our character list for the video included...

Boss
Jock
Geek
Soviet Boss
Soviet Thug
Agent
Girlfriend

I'm also currently working a behind the scenes video which I'll also post here when it's finished. Keep an eye out!

Nikon D90 at Life Chain 2009

As a lot of you know I've picked up a Nikon D90 this past year. Since then i've constantly being using its D-Movie functions. Many of the Peirao Group videos have been shot with the D90.

I've been planning for a while to begin producing small video snippets of my Church's numerious ministries. This is the first video that I've actually completed. I've been shooting a lot of b-roll, but haven't had opportunities to capture a-roll content.

The Life Chain is an international event that bring unity and organization to the protest against abortion. Pastor James McDonald explains the purpose very well in the video below. Enjoy!

Chootanaga, TN (aka: Chattanooga)

A little history concerning the name. I concluded that the City of Chattanooga would benefit from changing their name to Chootanaga. First of all, it sounds cooler and second, it rolls off the tongue easier. So Chootanaga it is!

Now for the actual events. I joined a photog friend Jen for a wedding gig she had this past weekend. The evening before we had a little time leading up to the rehearsal dinner to tour the city. so we strutted around and took some snaps for yours and our enjoyment.

Now Offering: Wedding Videos

Wedding videos are a great way to remember the day. While it will never replace the need for a photographer, a video of your special day, in this present time of social media networks, video is a great for sharing or reliving the day with friends and family. I focus my creative energy on the photography time of the day, its during that time when stress is most relieved. Family is enjoying themselves and the Bride and Groom are most at ease.

Here are a couple of videos that I've produced. Looking forward to more in the future. Drop me a line if you're interested in scheduling your wedding.

J Aaron Greene - Scott Kelby Guest Blogger

So my good friend, Aaron Greene from down south received recognition for his work of the Derek Webb Stockholm Syndrome video. The main interest to this video, at least from a photographers perspective, is that it was shot with the Nikon D90. Check out his whole post describing the project.Kelby Blog

So I passed through GA yesterday meeting some incredible people while doing so. Recently became acquainted with Jen of PhotoJenik Photography - take a look! Anyway, while restricted by the everlasting downpour we managed to capture some images of an amazing couple - Anna and Josh. Here are "some" of the pix from this section of the trip.

August...

Here's the video from the August Experimental Shoot. I tell you, it's great when you have friends willing to open up their property for a group of strangers to come out and take some photos. Thanks to the Plattner's for letting us come out, we truly had a blast! Hope you enjoy the video.

September

Just completed the September shoot this past weekend. Check out the album on facebook... September Gallery. In hindsight, a theme that I saw come out was turning day into night. All of the photos are shot during the day (10a-2p). Anyway I'd love for you to leave a comment on how well you think I accomplished my digital transformation of each shot. If you're on facebook, become a fan and leave a comment. Thanks!

Peirao Group

Peirao Group is been going steady for a while now and a lot of exciting things have been happening. The biggest of which was the our new name. "Peirao Group" - while visually peirao group looks cooler than "monthly experimental shoot" there were a few problems... one being pronunciation. So... to solve all problems I've created a video that should clear up all issues connected with that.

Enjoy!

I then also created a video for our July trip up to Chicago... Stay posted! August's video is coming soon.

For those living under a bush, The Peirao group is a collection of photographers that I organize a monthly experimental shoot for. The word Peirao is greek for "Try" or "Test" and that's exactly what we do at our shoots. Looks us up on facebook

Some exciting new directions...

Recently I've began walking down the road toward high production value commercial photography and love where it's taken me. Some of my idols of the industry are the likes of Chase Jarvis, Jeremy Cowart, and Joey L. I'd love to get some + and - feedback on my progress. I'm currently working on two projects one which is in the concept stages and other that's in production. The first couple images are from that.

Mimes

So I got together with some friends this past weekend to test an idea I had for a photoshoot. As you've probably discovered from the title... the idea includes mimes as the main attraction.

Not huge clown fan, but mimes are a different story. There is something inherently cool about mimes, even the "fake" mimes I got to take pictures of. Check out the entire gallery and let me know what you think!
