BTS featured on fstoppers' Wednesday Rundown

I woke up this morning and checked out fstoppers website to see my name screaming at me in their most recent post. If you're not familiar with fstoppers CHECK THEM OUT! They're a great resource for photographers of all experience levels.

I recently submitted a BTS video to their annual behind the scenes competition. I still haven't heard anything regarding the final results of the contest, but I'd say this is a good sign.

Tis the season to dawn Realtree® attire, paint your face, and hit the stands in pursuit of that trophy buck. Went out on a rainy thanksgiving weekend with my friend Brad to capture some new images for my portfolio as well as just have fun.

We shot this series with a single battery powered strobe bounced through a small umbrella.

Jedediah Smith + Peoria, IL + fstoppers.com

As part of a "behind the scenes" (BTS) competition submission for fstoppers.com, Me (Black Olive Photographic) have teamed up with Cellar Media and Justin Dwyer Photography to create something unique in this modern day photography. Rather than finding a young attractive model to grace our camera's lens, or some fast and exciting vehicle, we decided to go in a different direction... Back in time. We chose a fairly unknown historical figure to recreate "plausible" moments from his life. Jedediah Smith was an early American trapper who was known for his exploration of the west. He was a man of high moral grounding and was renowned and respected for his Christian faith and integrity. Another interesting tid-bit about Jedediah was his commitment to the journaling of his expeditions. He would document his travels and was one of the first recorded individuals to travel to California by land.

His commitment to journaling, I felt, made him an ideal candidate for the fstopper's spotlight. Since BTS is all about education and documentation, Jedediah's habitual journaling fit right in. I hope you enjoy this quick sneak peek of our photo shoot.

Wedding Videography Reinvented!

If I had my way, gone would be the days of full wedding day videos involving editing multiple angles of a ceremony and reception. Who watches that? Wedding videography should be something that can be put online and shared with friends easily. Why do you hire a photographer? ...to capture the emotions and details of the day... Why can't videographers have the same creative freedom to "interpret" as oppose to "document" the events of a wedding day?

This is exactly what I try and achieve with my approach to wedding videography. Give me a few minutes of your time and I'll share with you the emotions that I felt drove the wedding day. I've been blessed with a selection of couples who've hired me based on very little past experience or portfolio. Their trust in me to produce a work of art that captures the essence of their special day is an overwhelming responsibility.

Brandon and Lee Ann were an amazing couple to work with. Their energy for spontaneity was something I could never grow tired of. Combine that with the amazing locals for getting ready, ceremony, and reception and it was just brilliant.

On the road with an "Oversized Load"

One of the best things about this job is getting to experience the unexpected. I can go from photographing food one day to 14'x88' evaporates the next. To say that least "oversized" is an understatement. I've never seen anything this large go down a two lane road. I can't remember the exact weight, but the trailer alone had 80 tires with two semi's to push/pull this behemoth up hills. Out of the blue I received a call from Dedert Corp from up near Chicago needing photographs of a "large" evaporator vessel in transit. The vessel was being fabricated in Morton, IL and was be transported to Nebraska. All I can say is I love my job.

WIll+Lindsay - Wedding Video - Peoria, IL

It's always a blessing to have the opportunity to work with clients in different capacities. Will Waibel has, for the last year or so, trusted me with the photography of his custom designed homes [Dan Waibel Designer/Builder]. Of course Will's has long left the "client" category and has found his way into the "friend" zone. When they asked me to film a highlight reel of their wedding I was super excited. I knew it was going to be awesome!

Will and Lindsay found an incredible location to make the memory of their wedding even more beautiful. Peoria, IL is home to the Pettengill Morron house which has been standing for almost 150 years. The vintage setting really provided an incredible atmosphere making my job a piece of cake.

Grace - Senior Portraits - Pekin, IL

Grace was an excellent senior. Most photographer know to take note and enjoy the small things in life. Getting to work with a senior who's comfortable in front of the camera definitely counts as one of those small things in my opinion. I had been a while since I last photographed anything in Pekin, but I have to say there is a great selection of locations within a easy radius.

Milwaukee, WI - Architecture [round two]

I finely made my way back up to Milwaukee for the second time. It only took me a year or so, but I made up there again. Anyway, I toured the museum and walked the streets with some fantastic friends having a great time. However, you don't visit my blog for my anecdotal commentary of my life. Commercial Lifestyle Photography - Peoria, IL

As you can imagine it's really hard to find places in Illinois that don't look like... well... Illinois. What I mean by this is... It's hard to find locations that aren't just endlessly flat. Thankfully, with Peoria being a river town we have some bluffs that we can work to our advantage in creating the illusion of be on-location in the exotic locales throughout the United States.

Here's a few results from our photoshoot shot out at Camp Wokanda, A boy scout camp just North of Peoria a little ways off highway 29. Since Wokanda was located right on the river valley bluff we had some best looking "hills" illinois has to offer. I hope you enjoy this small series.

Film+Fashion BTS video shown on fstoppers.com

After re-watching our Film+Fashion photoshoot video I realized that it had received 1300+ views since this January when I posted it. While for some YouTube video's this isn't any great feat, for my lowly channel this was big. After investigating I found source of the spike. Our video was posted on fstoppers.com blog. Apparently the consensus is... I'm a hipster. Kind of odd since my whole purpose for the shooting film was to gain experience with a medium and I hadn't had experience with. Anyway, I thought it was pretty cool to get our video introduced to a bunch of photogs as a "great" video. Don't know if you'll appreciate it as much as I did, but hey, I don't care!

Losing My Jacket

Spring is slowly taking over winter one day at a time, but this past weekend was the first weekend I was able to get out and shoot without my jacket and that means a lot. Windy? yes, but that just made it interesting. This past Saturday I hit the streets of Peoria, IL with some old and new friends. Kirsten Krupps and Brian Robbins joined us to model and I had the opportunity to shoot beside Dirk Jaegle, and Justin Dwyer.

We spent a short piece of time experimenting with a concept I have for another, more involved, photoshoot. Can't wait to get out for that one. Anyway this was my first experience working with Kirsten and Brian and I have to say I'm looking forward to doing more shoots down the road. After shooting on the bridge we had the opportunity to go aboard the Spirit of Peoria for the remainder of our time which we didn't pass up. All I can say is if you're wanting a sweet classic venue here in the Peoria area check out what the Spirit has to offer.

Commercial Photo-Op - Michael's Italian Feast

The thing I love most about the commercial photography business is the opportunity to be challenged and to experiment with something different. I just got back from the first of a mulit-part photo shoot with Michael's Italian Feast. If you're familiar with my portfolio you'll know that I haven't shot a lot of food before... actually before tonight I hadn't shot any. Client Site Launch - Dan Waibel Designer/Builder

While on the slopes yesterday I received an email informing me that Dan Waibel Designer/Builder went live with their new site. This particular news is exciting for me due to spending all of last year working with them to photographically capture their portfolio.

Dan Waibel is designer and builder of high-end custom homes throughout Central Illinois. As you will quickly witness from their portfolio, each house, each remodel, each custom furniture piece is it's own unique work of art. Their attention to detail and styling is simply magnificent.

Julie - Senior Photography - Peoria, IL

Our first week in February and Peoria, along with the rest of the midwest, got dump upon with 15-20+ inches of sweet white stuff. Unfortunately, I was down with flu so I missed the opportunity to get out in it while it was busily building up around me.

This past weekend I remedied that, by getting out for a senior session with a Julie. Needless to say, 15 inches of snow creates a pretty interesting environment for photography. It was a welcome change from the norm. The normality being fall colors and city streets. Don't get my wrong, I enjoy those settings, but it's just great to have a change up!

You'll noticed however that some of the photos look very summery... that's thanks to the lovely Luthy Botanical Gardens in the Peoria. They've kept up a wonderful indoor atrium that was perfect to add a little variety to the final collection.

I don't normally do this sort of thing, but with Black Olive's Herbie vs Challenger photoshoot last year I feel like we have a connection. Today is Dean Jones' 80th birthday. If you're not familiar he stared in the original love bug. Happy Birthday Dean!

Film + Fashion Behind the Scenes - Peoria, IL

Once I start a project I like to wrap up the loose ends quickly. So here I am, before my previous post is cold in its grave posting the semi-conclusion to the Film + Fashion photoshoot. I say "semi" due to the fact I still have not developed the film from this little expedition. That detail is dependent on others to make happen and therefore must wait. Anyway, it got me thinking. Why not release the BTS from the shoot now along with the digital images that were shot and then re-release it along with a developing BTS video once I get that developing bit taken care of.

Project Background
Some of the "why" questions regarding this shoot will not be answered in the BTS video. I didn't think on my feet fast enough to talk about that on set. So, I'm going to take the opportunity to answer them now. Why film? well, I am a product of my generation and while I'm a photographer, I have actually never shot/developed film before now. I didn't go to school specifically for photography and therefore never had the opportunity handed to me.

However, the fascination with film as grown over the years and after literally 4 book boxes full of old camera's being dumped in my lap I couldn't pass up this opportunity to give film a whirl. Dirk Jaegle, friend and strong film advocate, came along to provide insight and shoot alongside. Needless to say we had a blast.

Throughout the entire day we tested out 5 cameras:
• Argus 35mm w/ a 50mm f3.5 lens
• Spartus Full Vue (120 film)
• YvigAlander Billiant (120 film)
• Tower (120 film)
• Agfa Isolette (120 film)

Another camera that you'll see a lot of throughout the video is the Kodak Dualflex IV. Unfortunately this camera shot 620 film which is harder film stock to come by so we weren't able to give it a run at this point, but it made for a great prop.

As always I was blessed again by Matt Blick of Cellar Media doing the BTS filming. Matt and I have done several gigs (Mission: Acquire, Herbie vs Challenger, Archer and Zowie) together and I love the work he produces.

Film + Fashion Photoshoot - Peoria, IL

This past weekend I invited some photography friends out for some experimenting with some old film cameras I received as a gift (see post: "unexpected gift"). We were blessed by the presence of two wonderful models, Caitlan and Alyson. Both models, surprisingly, were only in the area for a short period of time. One was from Idaho and the other - L.A.. To say the least... it was a fantastic happenstance. Due to the cold January weather here in Illinois we set up a black seamless in a large warehouse and hunkered down for a day of shooting.

Here's just a tiny preview of what is to come... unfortunately we won't have the film developed for another couple weeks, but hopefully this will tide you over until then. Oh and Matt Blick of Cellar Media, my favorite BTS guy, came and shot some footage for me. I hope to throw something together for you shortly!

Andrew Blahnik - Publicity Portraits - Nashville, TN

This past weekend (yep Christmas Eve) I hit the streets of Nashville with Andrew to get some new publicity images for for him to use, they may even end up on his new album that's currently in the works.

Andrew is working on a completely new sound, but you can hear some of his older work here. He's a got a lot of talent and love for the Lord, that right there is a killer combination. Anyway, I hope to get the rest of his images up soon. Stay tuned!

Keeping it alive!

What are you doing to keep your creativity alive? I have found that it is easy to get caught up in the thought that creativity will always be something that's easily accessible. In doing so I conveniently began treading through the rut which is my life and forget to break the norm and try something different. If you find yourself in the same rut, I will repeat my question. What are you doing to keep your creativity alive?

Well... for 2011 I've got a pretty cool project planned (if I don't say so myself). One of my photographic passions is capturing people in their own unique environment. A teacher in her classroom, a tailor in his shop, a pianist in a theater. In 2011, It is my goal to photograph as many environmental portraits as I can. My only stipulation is that each person must live, work, or play in Peoria. The focus of the environment doesn't have to be work or profession related, but could include a hobby or an activity. Really anything to helps define an individuals personality.

Obviously I can't fulfill the goal of this project by sitting on my hands at home, I most definitely need your help. If you know of anyone who would be an excellent candidate for a portrait please refer them. Even if you yourself wanna give it a go, I want to hear from you.

I'm looking forward to what 2011 holds.

Another short film experience.

Since my introduction to Matt Blick of Cellar Media, I'm am really starting to get into making these short films. This past weekend I work with Matt and a crew of other highly creative and talented people up near the quad-cities. In 48-hours we produced a great little short filled with excitement, adventure, suspense, and action. In addition to my roll as gaffer (lighting person), I was also turned out to be the "acting coach". Since we were working with a 10 and 12 year old it somehow fell on my shoulders to coach these young actors before each shot. Thankfully I had a lot of help from Kelli who did a tremendous job at making sure they were costumed up and ready to go when needed. To say the least I had a blast working with these Kids. They both had a lot of energy that they poured into their parts and really made my job a lot easier. I hope you enjoy the film!

Tis the season...

... to start sending/receiving Christmas cards. As a photographer, it's interesting to how many times your pictures show up on cards that you receive. I have photographed Samaritan Ministries Christmas staff images for the past couple years and it's always fun to see the end result.

On a similar note, Samaritan just recently launched their new site. This site is blanketed with my images. I'm looking forward adding to their collection in 2011.

An unexpected gift

Back when Providence Church was a wee little church comprised of four families we were blessed by a lay pastor named Rev. Robert LaMay. Fascination with cameras and photography was something we both had in common. While there were good number of years between us, it is evident that I am probably of copy of who he was when he was my age. He recently came for a visit and with him brought 4 large boxes of old film cameras of varying ages that he had collected over the years to leave in my care.

I started off with pulling them all out and categorizing them by what film they used. I then set up a few for some pictures to share with you. I can't wait to get out and try each and everyone of these cameras.

Peoria Illinois Skyline

One of the great things about living in the Peoria is all the readily available photography locations. There are very few fences and yet a lot of great old warehouse locations. In addition to all the great urban environments, Peoria is also surrounded by some of the most beautifully expansive natural landscapes around. This skyline pic was captured for a friend and owner of the new creative marketing agency Dalvay Group. James is going to be going live with his new site soon in which this photo will be making an appearance on.

Heart Technologies Inc. - Site Launch

Heart Technologies Inc. just launched their new home on the web. All the main banner images are mine. I have enjoyed my time work with the Heart team and I anticipate doing more with them come 2011. Keep an eye out for more images from Heart.

Shannon - Senior Portraits - Peoria IL

I recently hit the beautiful landscape of Sommer Park here in Peoria, IL with higschool senior Shannon. We had a great time shooting around at and around the parks rustic homestead. Herbie comes to Peoria IL

This past weekend was the culmination of a project that was a long time coming. Herbie vs. Challenger was yet another personal project in my series of story-driven collections. I have an instant fascination for vintage memorabilia, Herbie not being an exception. When I found out from a friend that he had restored a 64' VW bug to Herbie glory my imagination kicked into high gear. However, until I could find a contestant worthy of standing side by side with this American legend I was at an stand still. Wesley, the Herbie's owner, and I combed the streets looking for options. "Would this mini cooper work?" perhaps. What does the owner say?

Until a month or two prior to the shoot we didn't have any workable options to move forward on. I then noticed a 2010 yellow challenger sitting in a drive on my drive to and from Peoria. It was a perfect melding of past and present and it's bright yellow exterior would pop in any photo. It had the energy needed for the theme.

Production:
In the way of production we were faced with a couple of hurdles. First off... location. We had to find a great scenic location while finding a rural enough road to minimize traffic congestion. This was difficult, but we managed to find some great spots just outside Hanna City. See my earlier scouting post for location photos.

The theme/plot:
What can I say, I wanted to create an action series that involved somewhat cheesy to best recreate the classic Herbie feel. My villian (Kyle Motsinger), I didn't want him to be seriously evil, but I wanted him to be more of a lovable villian. A character with a devious foundation and a structural frame of egotistical arrogance. For Herbie, I wanted a character that appeared inexperienced at first, but who in fact had a few tricks up her sleeve as well - Red Bull anyone?

Kristy - Creative Portrait Session - Peoria, IL

Had the opportunity to work with the 2010 Miss Heart of Illinois. We walked the streets of Peoria Illinois and got pretty creative if I don't say so myself. In addition we couldn't have asked for better weather, we had just the right combination of clouds to blue skies giving a wonderful natural softbox to work with.. Below is just a glimpse of some of the fun we had before the mosquitos came out.

Commercial Experiment involving Herbie and a 2010 Dodge Challenger

I am working on a project coming up here in the next couple weeks that I am really excited about. Black Olive Photographic along with the assistance of several other highly creative individuals are going to be producing a street race themed photo shoot. Going head to head we have the lovable Herbie and in opposition a 2010 Dodge Challenger. While this scenario is promising all by itself I am going to trying and throw in a commercial element for fun. Something that gives it a little bit of pop and energy.

Anyway one of preliminary tasks of a photoshoot is to scout out a location to shoot. Below are a couple of shots from the area I'm thinking of shooting at. Can't wait till next Saturday!

Michelle - Artist Shots

Michelle is a graduate of Bradley Universities' musical program. She went on to receive her Masters from Indiana University just this year. Back in the area to visit family she called me up to get a quick session in. I was open the weekend she was planning on being in town and we made it happen. We started off the day down by Peoria's Civic Center capturing a modern set up shots. We then made out way up to Bradley's Dingeldine Music Hall to take advantage of classical pillar entrance. Her plan is to populate her new website with these images. Along with headshots she was interested in getting some shots strictly of her instrument to use throughout the site.

Maria - Senior

Maria was a blast to work with! Once she got comfortable in front of the camera I couldn't stop taking good pictures of her. Her session actually turned into a two-parter due to gloomy overcast skies when encountered on our regularly scheduled day. I'm aware that overcast skies are a great natural softbox, but if you want to include said skies in your shot all you get is a horrible white mass.

Lifestyle Photoshoot - Mtn. Biking at Farmdale, IL

I was shooting for something that would entice people to the recreation and create excitement at the same time. Movement was important. Kyle - Actor

A couple of days ago I had the opportunity to work with Kyle. He was a fantastic subject as we set out to capture some publicity headshots to promote himself with. Theater people are the best. They are so animated and are open to anything you throw at them. I took opportunity to experiment with some "character" development. In addition to your tranditional headshot, I attempted to add some flare to a couple of his portraits. Even more, Kyle's gelled red hair was incredible in low key dramatic shots - it just pops! Anyway, I could go on, but really there's nothing I could add to images themselves. Apart from the heat, we had a perfect day to shoot.

Ben Washburn - Portraits

Heart Technologies Inc. - Decatur Office

I just got back from a vacation in SC and I'm trying to get back on top of things. Sorry for the delay in posting. A week or so ago I went down to with Heart Technologies to their Decatur branch to take more publicity images for their marketing department. They were looking for "real" images that represented what they do without the use of professional models. All individuals are apart of the Heart team down in Decatur.

To say the least I had a fantastic time hanging out with them and I can't wait to see how they use the images. I've posted a view a couple images we captured throughout the day.

Furniture, Remodels, and Reformation Project

Last week I spent a day photographing three locations with Will Waibel of Dan Waibel Designer/Builder. The primary subject matter however was not new constructions, but rather custom made furniture and an art deco remodel they finished. I'm unable to post these photos at this time, but I can't wait to be able to share them with you.

Other happenings last week included the inaugurating meeting for the Reformation Project. I'm incredibly excited by all that's happened in such a short period of time. Here's the run down. We have a our three, I mean four scenes selected:

• Plow Boy Controversy (optional)
• Tyndale Translating
• Print Shop Raid
• Prison Interrogation

Other topics discussed were the distribution of job titles/responsibilities. We had a bunch of people step up and offer to help out on the project along with a few brave souls who offered to take on an on-going responsibility. Here's the break down:

Director: David Price (Me)
Producer: TJ Draper & John Creath
Historian: Colton Evans
Set Manager: Justin Ryken
Wardrobe Manager: Lily Riggenbach
BTS Director: Unknown

I, just today, sent around the initial storyboards to our set and wardrobe managers to get things moving along in both of those departments. In addition Behind the Scenes scripts are in the works despite vacancy in job title. I personally think this past week was a great starting week. Let keep it up!

Reformation Project

I have dawned yet another new "on-going" project which I am dubbing the "Reformation Project". Here's what it's all about. I have been looking for a way to direct my interests in creating theatrical driven images toward something artsy. Yes that was said slightly tongue n' cheek, but it's the fact of the matter. As I sift through a very large art book we have I've noticed that a lot of great art pieces are of pivotal, important events or people. While reflecting on modern art, I recall the likes of Picaso. Now, while I'm not begrudging Picaso his art, I'm intrigued by comparing the difference between his work and paintings like "Washington Crossing the Delaware" painted by Emanuel Leutze in 1851.

It's my intent to embark on the Reformation Project as it means to bring back a greater purpose for art. Rather than expressing one's self, I hope to express the impact God has had in history. Now, my gifting is not in oil on canvas, but I do have a gift for creating visual art via the medium of photography. To inaugurate this project my first piece will be of William Tyndale.

For those not familiar with Tyndale, he set out to translate the (currently latin) Bible into English. Against much opposition he ended up having to continue his work on the European mainland and smuggle the English Bibles back into England. He was later betrayed and captured and burned at the stake as a heretic. What better historical figure could I have chosen?

Tyndale is a great inspiration for me and I believe his story a great first project. If you haven't quite followed all of this, I'm planning a create photographic images of pivotal historic figures and events. The resulting images should be similar in composition to the painting above, but also very similar to the works of Rembrandt. I will be keeping this blog updated with all the happenings. I've also considered starting a special Facebook page for the Reformation Project. Stay tuned!

Keeping it Personal

If you know me I'm a strong supporter of personal photo projects. Some of the best images I've seen are from personal derived creations. Due to this, I've got quite a few projects in the works. This post is really just a teaser post since I'm unable to disclose any of the really interesting details, but I am hoping to give you a feel for what's coming up. Will I get to all the projects? I hope so, but with 9 projects in the queue it could become hard not to cut one or two as time gets tight.

Categories/Themes:
I'm really trying to diversify my work and really expand on what I've already done with the Fight Club and Mission: Acquire photoshoot. It's my intent to experiment with different emotions than what I have in the past. Here's a brief, nondescript list of the projects. This should provide a vary rough idea of what's in store.

- Car race sequence
- A theatrical scene designed with a political message
- Some fashion/lifestyle photoshoots
- Significant Historical Events photographed
- Agricultural Industry photoshoot
- Barbarshop photoshoot.

Peirao Group - April 2010

This past weekend was the first Peirao event of the summer. The group spent the day in downtown Peoria musing ourselves in the industrial area. We had a good turn out, 8 photographers, 3 models.

The Peirao Group is a local Peoria Illinois collective of photographers. We range from hobbyists to professionals and come together to share techniques and to just simply have a great time taking pictures. Often times, photographers can get hung up with making a profit and forget entirely why they first picked up a camera. We don't do that.

Heart Technologies Inc. - Peoria Business Showcase Booth

Business showcase was fantastic! The Heart booth looked great and I have to say was one of the more popular from what I saw while at the convention. I must admit I took a really pathetic picture of their booth. It really doesn't do it justice. Hopefully you can look past it's short-comings and focus on the the design and specifically the images that made the final cut! I was promised, by Amy, a better shot of the booth. So... once I get that I'll replace the one you see below!

DeLadurantey Law Office - Commercial Photography, Milwaukee WI

Heart Technologies - Commercial Photoshoot, Peoria, IL

Heart Technologies Inc is a locally owned business servicing the Central Illinois area. If it's not obvious, they are a technologies company offering solutions for businesses in need of phone, network, and security systems. I had the opportunity a couple of weeks ago to spend the day capturing images for their new marketing make-over. They're currently in the process of revitalizing their web presence as well as their trade show booth display. During my time there, I had the chance to witness a lot of cool technology being configured.

They'll be making an appearance at the 2010 Peoria Chamber of Commerce - Business Showcase this Wednesday. I look forward to attending and getting to see my images in action. If you're there make sure to look out for Heart's booth.

Senior Portraiture - Peoria, IL

This past weekend I walked the streets of Peoria with Caleb, a local high school senior. We found a spot in an alley way just south of O'Brien Field. I enjoy posing my subjects next to bright colors, specially in urban environments. This particular spot had a lot of great color to work with... A bright blue (aqua) doorway along with muted yellow garage doors. As you can see from the photos Caleb's eyes really pop with the blue backgrounds. Enjoy!

Peoria Home Show.

Product Photography

So I decided to do some product photography, but challenge myself with highly reflective objects - a decorative knife and sunglasses. Yes, sunglasses are probably the most photographed products around, but they do offer a unique trickiness to light without getting unwanted reflections in the final image. Dumit Ghantous - Environmental Portrait

So I'm just now wrapping up the editing on a shoot I had earlier today. This was a personal project, I have always been fascinated by environmental portraiture. Not to be confused with Environmentalism or going "green", environmental portraiture is the act of photographing a person in their own environment. For Dumit Ghantous, I chose his tailor shop. Mr. Ghantous is good friend of mine and I've been eager to photograph him at work. After 60 years at work he still staying active, working alongside his wife in their home. Milwaukee, WI - Architecture

This past Wednesday I made my way up to Milwaukee for a photo gig. After the photoshoot, I managed to walk the street and take pictures of a lot of beautiful architecture in the city and yes this includes the magnificent Art Museum. However, I wasn't able to shoot everything I wanted to due to time and the fading light I got a lot of great shots. I hope to go back this summer, I completely missed a lot of the incredible churches that Milwaukee is home to.

Hoerr Building Group - New Construction

Another Hoerr Building Group Project

Early this week I got pulled in to photograph a "basement" remodel for Hoerr Building Group. However as you'll see from the photos it's not your typical basement. This particular basement's feature list is endless. Here's a couple that might not be obvious from the pictures... Backlit marble counters and liquor shelf, flat panel TV behind bar mirror, and ventilation system for cigar smoke throughout basement. Enjoy!

Samaritan Ministries Int went live with their site a while back, but I just recently noticed. Their new design is using a collection of images I captured for them a while back. As a medical need sharing ministry I was trying to display the community factor of their ministrty. For those who don't know, Samaritan Ministries is a Christian alternative to health insurance. Thousands a Christians worldwide share millions of dollars in medical burdens with others within Samaritan community. This is a great ministry and a great work of faith.

Wandering Around Peoria, IL

THEMES: Fight Club

This past weekend we had our first "THEMES" Peirao event for the year. Our subject... a sequence of photos from a fight club event. While we had more photos we intended to shoots, we ran out of time and had to cut back on a rather ambitious schedule.

This is indeed a fantastic short film. Very meditative showing the beauty of both architecture and photography through the brilliance of CG. Watch it and soak it in. This is one of those instances where I'd love to say I could do that, but I would be lying.

Create Lighting Diagrams on your iPhone/iPod Touch

I just downloaded this sucker and I can already see it's potential. Actually I could see it's potential before I even downloaded it. What a great way to quickly show you assistants how to arrange the lights for a particular shoot. With the ability to create & save diagrams you can even doodle when you're board and come up with new ideas to test out in the future. It then allows you to save and send via email to anybody you'd like. Thanks to the guys over at Strobox, this app is fantastic!

Alien Bees Order has Shipped

As you can imagine, I'm pretty excited. I just go notified last night that my Alien Bees order has shipped. Now, I already have two B400 along with stands and umbrellas, but I felt like I was missing out on something big. This past weekend I ordered 24x36" medium sized softbox along with their new cybersync radio triggers.

According to UPS tracking my goodies should arrive sometime tomorrow.

Dairy Barn?

This past week I was pulled in to photograph the interior of a barn in a small town in the Peoria area. I don't know about you, but I don't see barns like this everyday. To say the least I was impressed. Now, before you start thinking the entire barn was like this let me just say that through the doors at the end of the hall it quickly begun to look like your typical barn.

Mission: Acquire - Behind the Scenes

I received a lot of support from everyone on my latest video "mission: acquire". If you're not familiar with this video you can check it out in an earlier post. I had a incredible time directing this film from concept to final submission. The guys I worked with made the whole experience fun from beginning to end. Couldn't have asked for a better crew. I've thrown together a short (but longer than the actual film) behind the scenes video for those interested, to see what went into to making this flick.

Choosing a Photographer

How does a photographer find the balance between shooting what he/she wants artistically and photographing what their clients want? Obviously the client should get what they want, they're the client. However, it can be difficult for a photographer to break from their style to adapt to a particular clients needs. Should clients take more time to carefully select a photographer that shares their style, or is it entirely up to the photographer to adapt?

I've recently began going down the road of real estate photography. Thankfully the clients I currently work with share my tastes in style. We work well together. However in the portraiture world I've worked with some clients who have their own idea for the shots. They chose me simply because I was a photographer and my rate fit within their budget. However, our styles didn't mess. I did the job, but acquiring desired results was difficult and I'd often end up with something that I'd probably not put in a portfolio. Artist have a portfolios for a reason. Yes its to display technical knowledge, but more importantly it should present the breadth of an artists style. I have a couple of different styles that I shoot. I often try and get clients to tell me what they liked in my portfolio so that I can get an idea of what they're wanting me to produce for them. This communication between clients and photographers is crucial. Hopefully this insight into one photographers mind helps those who're looking for a photographer make a great decision.

Nikon Festival

So I just wrapped up a project that has been submitted to the 2009 Nikon Festival. Once the video is available I'll be posting it on here. With a crew of 15 and a cast of 7 we produced a pretty incredible piece in a 2 week period. The video is currently in the "approval" period and I'm waiting to hear back with the results.

Nikon D90 at Life Chain 2009

As a lot of you know I've picked up a Nikon D90 this past year. Since then i've constantly being using its D-Movie functions. Many of the Peirao Group videos have been shot with the D90.

I've been planning for a while to begin producing small video snippets of my Church's numerious ministries. This is the first video that I've actually completed. I've been shooting a lot of b-roll, but haven't had opportunities to capture a-roll content.

The Life Chain is an international event that bring unity and organization to the protest against abortion. Pastor James McDonald explains the purpose very well in the video below. Enjoy!
